The only rule we know for growing Red Hot Poker is to try lots of them, as colors and bloom times vary, but Poker Face should be number 1 on your list. In trials, it has performed remarkably, blooming for weeks in midsummer and finishing cleanly enough to enjoy sporadic rebloom as well. Kniphofia has many aliases, including Torch Lily, Tritoma, as well as the common Red Hot Poker. With good drainage in a sunny location, it is easy to care for, has few pests and diseases that bother it and is drought tolerant once established. Bees and butterflies flock to the fiery pokers and you may be tempted to snitch a few for cut flowers as well.
